UPDATE: A new video has emerged that shows a gunman killing himself inside a Colorado mall during a shootout with police after the suspect allegedly said he had a gun and wanted to take it to a movie theater.
The shooting occurred Sunday afternoon in Aurora, Colo., a city of about 10,000 people, about 25 miles south of Denver.
The Aurora Police Department said in a statement that an officer was able to detain a man at the mall, but that the man turned and opened fire on the officer.
The officer returned fire and killed the man, police said.
The officer was taken to the hospital and later died.
No further details were released.
The Associated Press was not able to independently verify the video.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Michael Edward Dyer, of Aurora, was arrested in a suburb of Denver, police spokeswoman Michelle Williams said.
She did not say whether he had an attorney.
The FBI’s Denver office said it was assisting the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Aurora police Chief Greg Rand said he believed the man was the intended target of the shooting.
“It was clear to me that this was a very well-planned and well-executed attack,” Rand said in an interview.
“It is a tragic loss for our city.”
Authorities were investigating whether the suspect had been under surveillance.
Rand said that the shooter may have been armed with an AR-15 rifle, a shotgun, and other firearms, but police did not release details.
He also said that Dyer was believed to have been in possession of a “high-capacity magazine” of ammunition.
